Time To Bet On Next Tennis Grand Slam Is Now, Here's How

It may seem like it's way too early to bet on a tennis Grand Slam, after all, the nearest one isn't until the Australian Open in January 16, 2023 — more than three months away. But that's the wrong mentality because right now is an opportune time to lock in great betting prices on the big-time tournament. Keep reading this and we'll give you expert betting advice on how to bet on the 2023 Australian Open!

Australian Open Men’s Pick

Let's begin on the men's side shall, we? The sport is amid an interesting phase. One era — dominated by the "Big Three" — is slowly being ushered out, while a new era is on the cusp of beginning. That's why you'll see old and new faces on the 2023 Australian Open favorites list, as set by popular tennis betting sites:

PlayerBetOnlineBovada
Novak Djokovic+125+125
Daniil Medvedev+275+275
Carlos Alcaraz+325+325
Nick Kyrgios+650+650
Rafael Nadal+750+750
Jannik Sinner+1000+1000

One member of the famed Big Three is no more as Federer called it quits a few weeks ago. He piled up 20 Grand Slams during his illustrious career — two off the all-time record held by fellow Big Three member, Nadal. However, the other two are still holding down the sport, but one has to wonder for just how much longer? Nadal, who to his credit won a pair of Grand Slams this year, is 36 and Djokovic is 35.

If the Big Three are the old guard, then the new one could consist of U.S. Open winner Carlos Alcaraz, Nick Kyrgios, and Frances Tiafoe. All three flashed at the most recent Grand Slam and as you can see in the odds table above, bookies are pegging them as legit threats to win the Australian Open in Melbourne come 2023.

However, we're not ready to write off the now "Big Two." Matter of fact, we're picking Djokovic to be our Australian Open betting pick. On one hand, that choice feels like a no-brainer. Djokovic does own 21 Grand Slams, and nine of them have come in Melbourne, more than any other Grand Slam for the Serbian. The hardcourts of the tournament definitely favor his playing style.

But on the other hand, there's no guarantee Djokovic will even be allowed to enter the country (again). His unvaccinated status infamously cast a massive shadow over his entire 2022 campaign, which included having the same amount of Grand Slam bans (Australian and U.S. Open) as tourney tiles at two apiece. But we're betting that the "Land Down Under" relaxes its strict travel policy, which most countries are doing worldwide. COVID has become a thing most have to life with, after all.

Due to the bans, Djokovic lost his No. 1 ranking this year, a title that now belongs to the 19-year-old phenom Alcaraz. The young Spaniard's time as the face of the sport will come (sooner rather than later), but we're not about ready to crown him over Djokovic at this moment, especially not on the hard surfaces of the Australian Open. Lock in Djokovic's price now before it changes if his Australian ban is officially lifted.

Australian Open Women’s Pick

On the men's side, there are four different players with odds +650 or shorter. On the women's? Only one — the runaway favorite to win. Take a hard look at how lopsided the odds are for the Australian Open women's betting field:

PlayerBetOnlineBovada
Iga Swiatek+225+225
Naomi Osaka+750+750
Simona Halep+900+900
Aryna Sabalenka+1000+1000
Elena Rybakina+1200+1200
Coco Gauff+1200+1200
Ons Jabeur+1200+1200

A "passing of the baton" is happening with the men, but we'd argue it's already happened with the women's side. In the last six months, two of the top female players have taken their swan song (for now) and that's Serena Williams and Ash Barty. Williams, of course, has dominated this sport more than any other woman in history ever has. Barty, while not nearly as consistent, was ranked No. 1 in the sport and even triumphed at the 2022 Australian Open.

With Williams and Barty in the rear-view mirror, the sport now belongs to Iga Swiatek — and no one is even close to her either. Let's recap Swiatek's insane 2022 season, shall we? She went 55-7 this season with seven title wins, including two Grand Slams (French Open and U.S. Open). She shot up to the No. 1 ranking during a 37-match win streak that's the highest of this century. Oh, and did we mention she's only 21 years of age? Yeah, as we said, the throne is hers and only hers.

We're squarely backing Swiatek to win the Australian Open. She advanced to the semi-finals of the 2022 event, but we've seen her turn the corner since then. What really gives us the confidence to bet Swiatek here is this crazy but true stat: in title matches, Swiatek has won 10 in a row — and not just won, but swept her opponent in straight sets each time out. If that doesn't tell you she's clutch then we don't know what will.
