The 22-time Grand Slammer winner (most of all time) Rafael Nadal is in the mix, but at what capacity? Nadal notably pulled out of the Wimbledon semis with an abdominal tear — the worst possible timing as a third Grand Slam win in 2022 felt within reach for the Spaniard. He returned to action for the first time at the recent Cincinnati Open, but was defeated in his first match by the eventual event winner, Borna Coric. We’re not quite sure the 36-year-old Nadal is fit enough to win a five-set tournament, which is why we’re passing on him.
And then there’s Carlos Alcaraz, who some believe is an heir apparent to Nadal (both are Spaniard). The 19-year-old shot up the world rankings (currently No. 4) with four titles this season but has gone cold in this North America stretch. First he was bounced in the Round of 32 at the Canadian Open, then the quarters of Cincinnati Masters. Alcaraz is just not playing well enough the past few weeks to warrant a Finals appearance bet.
That leaves us with Medvedev — not only a new “big three” player, but the reigning US Open champion (he shockingly beat Djokovic in three sets here last year). Medvedev drew the bracket’s number-one seed and we’re betting he survives until the very end. All the injuries to top contenders, plus his own history of success at Flushing Meadows (Medvedev also went to the 2019 Finals) makes Medvedev the “safest” choice in a bracket that is shaping up to be wildly unpredictable.
Men’s Big Three Vs. The Field

Swiatek’s streakiness has cooled significantly the last month. In her previous three events, she’s been eliminated twice in the round of 16 and another time in the quarters.
