2022 Wimbledon’s Women’s Singles Preview
As you saw above, the 2022 Wimbledon women’s singles event feels like Swiatek vs. the field. There’s a huge gap between Swiatek’s betting odds and the second-closest Ons Jabeur (a difference of +670 between the two). That’s partly due to Swiatek’s domination over WTA the past five months, but a few other reasons too.
At the French Open, few of the top draws outside of Swiatek played remotely well. The vast majority were eliminated by the third round. So there’s not a lot of recent momentum going into Wimbledon for other top-ranked players. Serena Williams is back in the mix, but in what form is a giant question mark for the 40-year-old, who undoubtedly will be shaking off playing rust.
The 2021 Wimbledon champion was Ash Barty, who remains in retirement. Swiatek’s unbelievable rise came in the wake of Barty calling it quits and that once again hangs large at the All England Club where it seems like Swiatek’s is unrivaled. Though, we challenge that notion later on so stay tuned.
Best Picks To Win 2022 Wimbledon Women’s Singles Title
Rather than automatically assuming Swiatek will roll through the Grand Slam (again), we’ve done our due diligence here to make our 2022 Wimbledon women’s singles picks. And yes, picks is plural because we’re taking two different players in London. Allow us to explain our rationale:
Iga Swiatek
Swiatek hasn’t lost a match since February. Her four-month-plus run since then has been nothing short of spectacular. A 35-match winning streak. Number-one world ranking. A French Open title, the second Grand Slam of her young career (she’s only 21 years old). Title wins in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Radom, Stuttgart, and Rome. Utter dominance if you can tell.
However, she’s not that big of a betting favorite in London, at least given her recent form. We mean, she’s still plus-money to win. Oddsmakers, we believe, are tempering their expectations because Swiatek has a so-so track record on grass courts. She is just 3-2 at Wimbledon. Furthermore, over her career, she has played a meager 12 matches on grass, none of which include this year.
Grass could be quite the adjustment for Swiatek. We’re still going to bet on her to win, but we won’t be putting “all our eggs in one basket” due to the risk factor. We’ll be complimenting our Swiatek back with one more player, which we’ll cover next.
Simona Halep
It might be wrong to call a former Wimbledon champion a sleeper pick, but that’s what it feels like for Halep here. It’s her first return to the All England Club since triumphing here back in 2019 (2020 was canceled and an injury ruined her 2021 hopes). She has rather long odds to win at +1600, but we’re taking it nonetheless.
Admittedly, Halep drew a tough draw. Paula Badosa and two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova potentially lurk down the line. Heck, Halep will have a tough time even reaching that far. Early on, she’ll likely come face-to-face with Kirsten Flipkens and Camila Giorgi.
Regardless, we have full faith in Halep to survive and potentially win out. Our confidence stems from her new coach Patrick Mouratoglou, who famously guided Serena’s career before. Returning to the grass-court where Halep’s career initially took off also helps. So we’re doing double bets on Swiatek and Halep. Backing two proven Grand Slam winners isn’t a bad online betting strategy whatsoever.
