IPL Picks; Sunrisers look good for second win when they take on the Knight Riders

After claiming their first win of the 2023 IPL season last Sunday, the Sunrisers Hyderabad will be looking to go back-to-back when they face the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens this Friday. Can the Sunrisers do it? Or will the Knight Riders record their third win of the 2023 IPL season? Here we take a closer look with our latest Indian Premier League betting picks.

  • What; 2023 Indian Premier League - Match 19
  • Who; Kolkata Knight Riders vs Sunrisers Hyderabad
  • Where; Eden Gardens, Kolkata, India
  • When; Friday, April 14th, 2023
  • Time; 10 am ET

A huge match for both teams

Even at this early stage of the competition, this is a huge fixture for both teams. The Knight Riders weren’t fancied to do well this year, but have won their last two after starting off with a defeat. As for the Sunrisers, they started off poorly, but managed a crushing win over the Punjab Kings last weekend.

This game will go a long way to telling us whether the Sunrisers really have turned a corner. A win for Hyderabad would see them join the Knight Riders on four points from four matches. But a win for the Knight Riders would see them open up a four points gap over Hyderabad, and leave Aiden Markram’s franchise languishing near the bottom of the table. A position they’ve become all too familiar with over the past two to three years!

Knight Riders cut to win IPL after back-to-back wins

The Kolkata Knight Riders started the competition as one of the outsiders at +2000 to win the IPL outright. They have now been slashed to just +800, on the back of two great wins over the Gujarat Titans (3 wickets), and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (81 runs).

The win over Gujarat was a huge run chase that went to the final ball (KKR needed 205 to win). While the win over RCB was just an outright thrashing. Both wins were highly impressive for different reasons though. And as a result, the Knight Riders are now fifth at +800 in the latest cricket betting odds.

As for the Sunrisers, well, they started the season with optimism that this year could be better than previous ones. That optimism was soon diminished when they stupidly asked the Rajasthan Royals to bat first after winning the toss in their opening match. The decision ultimately cost them the game, with the Royals posting 203/5, and going on to win the match by 72 runs.

Things didn’t fare much better for the Sunrisers in their second match either. On this occasion they lost to the Lucknow Super Giants by 5 wickets. But rather than hitting the self-destruct button, the Sunrisers were simply beaten by a better side.

The Sunrisers did fight back against the Punjab Kings. After restricting the Kings to 143/9, they were led to victory by skipper Aiden Markram (37no) and Rahul Tripathi (74no). The pair calmed any nerves with an unbeaten partnership of 100 to win the game with plenty to spare.

The win saw the Sunrisers’ odds to win the IPL cut to +1400. This is where they started the competition. But after back-to-back losses, they did drift out to +1800.

Our Picks

Venkatesh Iyer is in decent form for the Knight Riders. He smashed 83 from 40 balls in the win over Gujarat. In the same match, Nitish Rana anchored the innings with a solid 45 from 29 balls. In playing the innings at that pace, Rana spelled out his role in the team. This says his job is to be there at the end, and that makes him a good pick to be Kolkata’s top batter at +400.

In the betting to win the match, the top online sports betting sites have it close. The Knight Riders - with home advantage - are -115, the Sunrisers are -105.

Both sides won their last respective matches, and as a result, it is hard to make a judgment call based purely on form.

In the Sunrisers’ opening loss, there was no Aiden Markram. He has arrived now, and seems to have steadied the ship. On the flip side, the form of Harry Brook should be a concern. But the chances are, he will come good at some point for the Sunrisers.

It may be too early to say that the Sunrisers are ready to go on a run, but we feel at slightly longer odds, they are just the better value pick to win this match.
