Australia look a good bet to clinch the Ashes at Old Trafford

The 4th Test of the Ashes comes from Old Trafford, and just like in the last match, England needs to win if they want to keep their hopes of regaining the Ashes alive. Can England do it? Or will Australia keep their cool and finish the job in Manchester this weekend? In our latest cricket betting picks we look at both sides' chances and tell you who we think will win.

  • What; The Ashes 4th Test match
  • Who; England vs Australia (1-2)
  • Where; Old Trafford, Manchester, England
  • When; July 19th-23rd, 2023

Australia leads the series 2-1 with just two matches left. This means a draw in Manchester will see the Aussies retain the Urn and ensure it stays Down Under until the 2025/26 series, at the very least.

As the current holders of the Urn, Australia only needs to draw the series to retain the Urn. But this Australian side is in England to make history. And they want to be the first visiting side since 2001 to win the Ashes outright on English soil.

To do this, they either need to draw the 4th and 5th Test matches, or win one of them. And with the weather possibly intervening and playing a part in this week’s 4th Test, there is now a real chance we could have our first drawn match of the series.

But with England needing to win this Test match if they wish to keep the series alive, this could lead to even bolder play from Ben Stokes’ team. And that could play into the hands of Pat Cummins and the Australian team.

England vs Australia 4th Test Betting

After winning the third match of the series at Headingley, England heads into a Test match as the favorites with the bookmakers for the first time in the series.

England is +140 to win the 4th Test match, with Australia at +165. The draw is now +280, having been +325 just a day or two ago. The shortening of the draw odds is down to rain being forecast to play a part in the match over the five days.

In the draw no-bet market, both sides are -110. England was the favorite at -125, but given the updated weather forecast, both sides are now given a 50/50 chance in this market.

Betting to win the 2023 Ashes

In the outright Ashes winner betting, Australia is the favorite at -250. They were -700 when they were 2-0 up. But after England’s win in Leeds, the Aussies have now drifted.

As for England, the best cricket betting online sites now have Ben Stokes’ team at +400. At 2-0 down, they were +800.

Finally, a drawn series is now +550, having been +900.

England name playing eleven early again

Yet again, England named their side a couple of days before the start of play. The hosts have made one change, with James Anderson coming into the side in place of Ollie Robinson.

Will Australia drop David Warner or Todd Murphy?

As for Australia, there is talk that David Warner’s place in the team is under threat. The opener has been again struggling for form in England. And with Australia looking to try and find a way to bring Cameron Green back into the side, Warner’s position has come under threat.

With rain in the air, Warner may well be safe. This is because the other option the Aussies appear to be exploring is leaving out inexperienced spinner Todd Murphy, and going with an all-seam attack. That would also be a risk at a ground that is receptive to spin bowling.

Our Picks

At 2-1 down in the series, and with a bit of bad weather possibly shortening the match, England are already on the back foot. The only way this England side knows how to counter that is to be more attacking. And this can go one of two ways. If it works, England will take the draw out of the equation, and the series will be 2-2 or 3-1 at the conclusion of the match.

But the problem is, England has lost the first and second Test matches by being too reckless. Captain Ben Stokes has already stated that if he has to take more risks to force a result, he will.

We believe this will firmly play into the hands of the Australians. And speaking of hands, one of the main reasons why the Aussies are ahead is because they have safer ones. Australia has dropped far fewer catches than England in this series and made fewer mistakes in general.

They have made mistakes. But England has regularly repaid them by making bigger and better ones.

Regardless of all that, this match really could go either way. It’s just been that sort of a series. But on the balance of probability, a bet on Australia to win has to be the betting pick.
