Oklahoma is a slight 1-point favorite on Friday night. The Sooners upset the Crimson Tide 23-21 in Tuscaloosa in November, ending Alabama's 17-game home winning streak. Brent Venables' club turned three turnovers into 17 points, including an 87-yard interception return for a touchdown.

However, OU generated only 212 yards of offense - its fewest since 2022. That likely explains why the OVER/UNDER is set at 40.5 points for Friday's rematch.

Quarterback battle

Ty Simpson passed for 3,268 yards with 26 touchdowns and five interceptions for Alabama this season. The junior quarterback struggled in a 28-7 loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship Game, completing 19 of 39 passes for 212 yards, a TD and an INT. Simpson performed better in the 23-21 defeat to the Sooners, throwing for more than 300 yards with a score and a pick.

John Mateer put together pedestrian statistics in 2025, passing for 2,578 yards, 12 TDs and 10 INTs. The Sooners' junior QB only passed for 138 yards the last time these two clubs met. In his last game versus LSU, he passed for more than 300 yards for only the second time all season but he was also intercepted three times in the 17-13 victory.

Keys to victory

Oklahoma is top 10 nationally in points per game (13.9), yards per game (273.6) and run defense (81.4). Exactly what you would expect from a Brent Venables' coached team. However, there is some question if star defensive lineman R Mason Thomas will be healthy for this one after missing the Sooners' final three games.

Most pundits don't believe Alabama belongs in the tournament. But the Crimson Tide has shown they can beat anyone on a given day with quality wins over Georgia, Vanderbilt, Missouri, Tennessee and LSU.

Although Oklahoma has defeated Alabama in back-to-back years, it is troubling that they were out-gained 406 to 212 yards in their last victory in Tuscaloosa. Unless the Sooners' opportunistic defense creates another three turnovers, we like the Crimson Tide to make everyone eat their words about their playoff worthiness.
