All in all, there are 13 teams in the completion. These are the “best of the best” and earned their way into the championship. To qualify, teams had to finish atop their continental championships. Here’s which teams qualified and from what region:
- From the European Championships (in qualification order): Switzerland, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Scotland, Estonia, Denmark and Türkiye
- From the Pan Continental Championships (in qualification order): Korea, Japan, United States and New Zealand
This year’s edition marks the 45th world women’s championship. In that near half-century, three countries have dominated the field. The trio of Canada, Switzerland, and Sweden have combined to win 35 out of 44 gold medals up to this point. That’s why it’s zero surprise these nations are once again frontrunners in the eyes of the bookies.
Whoever captures gold in 2024 will have to run the usual gauntlet. This is a round-robin first round where all 13 teams play each other at least once. There are no separate groups. At the conclusion of this stage, the top-six-finishing nations get a playoff spot with the No. 1 and No. 2 teams getting a bye into the semis. The postseason is single elimination until there is a winner.
We should also mention this is the first time a women’s championship is hosted in Nova Scotia. Canada has hosted the event numerous times, just not there. You have to believe the home-ice advantage can only benefit the Canadians, the most successful team in event history. Speaking of which, let’s get into our betting picks for the event now.
Best Picks To Win Women’s World Curling Championship?
We could realistically convince ourselves into betting four or five teams here. We won’t do that, of course. Only two teams are getting our bets to win the women’s championship. It wasn’t easy, but these two have our highest level of confidence:
Switzerland
This is the obvious bet to take, but the necessary one too. Until someone knocks off the number-one-ranked Swiss, then there’s no arguing anyone is better than them. No one.
Here you have the defending champions. Not once, not twice, not even three times, but the four-time defending champions. Little has changed for this squad that is still skipped by Silvana Tirinzoni. They won the European Championships in December so they should be as confident as ever.
We tried to play devil's advocate and find a reason NOT to put money on Switzerland. Honestly, all we came up with was complacency but even that one doesn’t hold up. You don’t win four titles in a row like the Swiss have if you’re complacent. All this is to say just take this bet. Seriously, no need to overthink it.
Canada
Here’s another pick that’s not “sexy”, but we’re here to make money, not win style points. The Canadians are right behind Switzerland in the betting odds for reasons you already know: it’s Canada, they dominate this sport. And it helps that they are hosting too.
But here’s one more reason to pick Canada: they are likely motivated to right the wrongs of the past. For all of this country’s success, they’ve fallen on hard times (by its own lofty standards). Canada hasn’t won gold since 2018. Worse, they haven’t even made it to the championship game since then either.
We expect to see Canada to play with a proverbial chip on the shoulder because of these recent letdowns. That’s a dangerous combo for a team at home and loaded with talent. So take Canada to compliment your Switzerland wager.
