The CFL season is fast approaching, and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are still the +250 favorites with Betonline to win the Grey Cup this year, despite a recent 25-12 pre-season loss to Saskatchewan.

  • What? 2024 Canadian Football League Season
  • Where? Canada
  • When? June 6 – November 17, 2024

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+250)

The Bombers have experienced back-to-back defeats in the Grey Cup finals, but they are ready for another shot at the title, and the best sports betting sites still list them as the favorites. Zach Collaros continues to be a standout, throwing for a career-high 4,252 yards last season. However, he also showed some inconsistency, with a career-high 15 interceptions.

In 2022, Winnipeg aimed for a three-peat but fell short. Despite this, the core team remains intact, determined to reignite their dynasty. In their recent pre-season loss to Saskatchewan, Winnipeg's sole touchdown came with 2:22 left in the fourth quarter when Terry Wilson connected with Kevens Clercius on an eight-yard pass. The Bombers missed the subsequent two-point conversion. Kicker Sergio Castillo added two field goals, hitting from 26 and 53 yards.

Several veterans, including Collaros, linebacker Adam Bighill, receiver Nic Demski, tailback Brady Oliveira, and receiver Dalton Schoen, did not travel to Regina for the pre-season game. Defensive end Willie Jefferson was in uniform but did not participate in the game.

The Bombers will host Calgary on May 31 for their final pre-season game and will kick off the regular season on June 6, hosting Montreal in a rematch of the 2023 Grey Cup, which the Alouettes won 28-24.

Toronto Argonauts (+315)

The Argonauts have been busy bolstering their squad ready for a tilt at the Grey Cup. Just six days before their first preseason game against the Montreal Alouettes, the team announced the signing of quarterback Nick Arbuckle. To make room for Arbuckle's return, Toronto released quarterback Hunter Raquet and wide receiver Savon Scarver.

Arbuckle's addition provides the Boatmen with valuable veteran insurance, especially with Chad Kelley suspended until late August. Arbuckle joins presumed opening day starter Cameron Dukes and the inexperienced Bryan Scott on the roster. His history with head coach and play-caller Ryan Dinwiddie, under whom Arbuckle experienced his best success in the CFL, offers Toronto a reliable option if Dukes and Scott struggle to perform at a high level.

The Argonauts are +315 to win the Grey Cup.

Montreal Alouettes (+550)

The Montreal Alouettes have made a significant addition by signing longtime NFL defensive lineman Aaron Lynch. The six-foot-five, 285-pound Cleveland native was a fifth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft out of the University of South Florida by the San Francisco 49ers. During his tenure with the 49ers, he played in 44 games with 19 starts, amassing 83 total tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, seven pass knockdowns, and one fumble recovery.

In 2018, the 31-year-old Lynch signed with the Chicago Bears, where he spent two seasons. Over 29 games with three starts, he recorded 22 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, five sacks, three forced fumbles, and one interception. Lynch's final NFL season was with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020, during which he made six total tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, and one pass knockdown in eight games.

In addition to Lynch, the Alouettes have signed Canadian receiver Nicholas Gendron, American offensive lineman Donald Ventrelli, and American defensive lineman Jordan Domineck. To make room on the roster, the club released Canadian offensive lineman Matthew Hajewich, American defensive linemen Justin Ademilola and Jacorey Johns, and American linebacker Christian Morgan.

The Alouettes will play their first preseason game on Saturday, May 25, when they host the Toronto Argonauts.

Betting On CFL

The CFL season typically runs from mid-June to late November, culminating in the Grey Cup. There are nine CFL teams, each playing an 18-game schedule over a 21-week season, which includes three bye weeks for all teams.

Following the regular season, six teams qualify for the postseason. The top team in each division earns a bye to the Division Championships. The next two teams in each division are seeded as No. 2 and No. 3. The winners of these matchups then play the top seed in their respective divisions for the West or East Championship. The victors of these games advance to the Grey Cup final.
