Veteran Jelena Ostapenko was making news for all the wrong reasons at the US Open. Her controversial comments following a loss to Taylor Townsend put the Latvian player in the midst of a storm of her own creation.
At the WTA Guadalajara Open, Ostapenko is suddenly front and center again. This time, it's through nothing of her own doing.
Three WTA veterans have already been eliminated from the tennis betting lines in this event. Top-seeded Elise Mertens, No. 2 seed Veronika Kudermetova, and 2023 Guadalajara Open champion Maria Sakkari were all ousted in the Round of 16.
That leaves former World No. 5 Ostapenko sitting as the +500 favorite to win the tournament in the tennis betting odds.
Let's look at the latest WTA Guadalajara Open tennis betting lines. Odds are subject to change.

Upsets Throw Guadalajara Open Betting Wide Open
The Guadalajara Open has been held since 2022. It began its existence as a WTA 1000 tournament. However, the event dropped down to WTA 500 status in 2024 when Wuhan returned to the WTA schedule as a 1000 tournament.
Let's take a look at all of this year's top contenders.
Jelena Ostapenko (+500)
This is Ostapenko's first tournament action since the furor she created following her loss to Townsend at the US Open. She would later offer Townsend an apology for her outburst.

The Latvian player is No. 24 in the WTA rankings. When she's on her game, Ostapenko can beat anyone. She was the 2017 French Open champion.
Ostapenko won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix earlier this year. She beat both of the world's top two players - Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek - on her way to that title.
Iva Jovic (+550)
American Jovic is situated 73rd in the WTA rankings. Just 17, she reached the final of the Lexus Ilkley Open, a WTA 125 tournament.
Emilia Arrango (+800)
Arrango just played in the Guadalajara 125 Open, reaching the quarterfinals. Ranked 86th in the world, the Colombian is 3-10 over her past 13 matches.
Tatjana Maria (+1100)
Maria reached the final of the Hall of Fame Open in July.

The German player is rated 51st by the WTA.
Magdalena Frech (+1400)
The defending champion in this event, Frech is the fourth seed in this year's tournament.
The Polish player hasn't made it past the quarterfinals of an event since her win in Guadalajara.
Nikola Bartunkova (+1800)
A qualifier at Guadalajara, Bartunkova has reached the quarterfinals of a WTA event for the first time in her career.
The Czech player has climbed to No. 226 in WTA rankings. It's the highest ranking she's ever held.
WTA Guadalajara Open Prop Bets
Ostapenko is the even money betting favorite to win her quarter of the draw in WTA Guadalajara Open prop bets. Nikola Bartunkova, at +110, is the slight favorite over Magdalena Frech (+130) to win the fourth quarter of the draw.
The first quarter is the +175 chalk to provide the tournament winner. As well, it's the top half of the draw, featuring Ostapenko, that is the -150 odds-on favorite to produce the winner of the tournament. You'll get odds of +115 if you go with the bottom half of the draw in the tennis betting odds.
A betting line of -170 can be accessed if you wager on an unseeded player reaching the WTA Guadalajara Open, and that's not surprising. In the past two years, the losing finalist was an unseeded player. It was Carolina Dolehide in 2023. Last year, qualifier Olivia Gadecki reached the final.
And The Winner Is . . .
Going with a top-seeded player to win the tournament is a wise betting strategy at the WTA Guadalajara Open. Last year, Frech was the No. 5 seed. Sakkari won as a two seed in 2023. The year before, third-seeded Jessica Pegula was the champion of this event.
It's easy to make a case that Ostapenko could win. She's certainly caught plenty of breaks, what with Mertens, Kudermetova, and former champ and two-time finalist Sakkari all going out in their first matches. That's cleared a path for the Latvian to win easily. Bet on Ostapenko to gain her second title of the season in the WTA Guadalajara Open picks.
