Odds to Win the 2017-18 English Football League Championship

Premier League Future Odds

Defending champions Chelsea will enter the 2017-18 English Premier League campaign as the favorites once again, the club’s outspoken manager Antonio Conte said recently.

“For sure; we won the Premier League title last season,” Conte told reporter on why they should be considered frontrunners. “This season will be tough. You know what has been happening in England. Chelsea won in 2014-15 and then Leicester City won the league. So, we must be careful and not take any team lightly.”

While Conte strongly believes Chelsea will be odds-on favorites to repeat as EPL champions, several sportsbooks — including — think otherwise.

Manchester City’s transfer window spending spree has vaulted Pep Guardiola’s side to the top of the early favorites, as Bovada is pegging the Sky Blues as +185 favorites to win it all.

We break down the top five contenders heading into the EPL season.

Manchester City (+185)

Man City opened its pocketbook this summer as the club looks to improve from a third-place finish in 2016-17. Among key acquisitions, perhaps Manchester City’s biggest signing was left-back Benjamin Mendy from Monaco. Mendy inked a deal with Man City worth £52 million.

Expect Guardiola to take a page out of Conte’s book as he expects to play a 3-4-2-1 formation — similar to the one that helped Chelsea capture the English Premier League championship in 2017. In midfield, there’s a good chance Yaya Toure and David Silva will partner up, making Man City one of the top teams in the middle of the pitch.

Finally, Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero will be the offensive producer for Man City. His 20 goals in 2016-17 was the most on the club and ranked tied for fourth overall in the Premiership.

Chelsea (+325)

There aren’t many holes in Chelsea’s rock-solid starting 11 and the club added even more depth during the summer transfer window. Forward Alvaro Morata inked a club-record £60-million transfer from Real Madrid and is expected to add more scoring depth to Chelsea’s offense, which already consists of Diego Costa, Eden Hazard and Pedro.

It’ll be hard to top Chelsea’s performance from last season, when the club finished with 30 wins, 3 draws and 5 losses. The Blues netted 85 goals while only allowing 33 the entire EPL season. Chelsea is an even more powerful team at Stamford Bridge, where it dropped only 2 games in 2016-17 and outscored their opponents 55-17.

Manchester United (+325)

Jose Mourinho’s time at Old Trafford hasn’t gone according to plan since taking over as manager of the Red Devils in 2016. The Portuguese coach’s debut season with ManU resulted in a sixth-place finish — seven points out of qualifying for the Champions League draw.

Mourinho was brought in to restore a championship model that helped the club capture a record 20 EPL titles and 12 FAP Cups. Expect Manchester United to be in the mix for a league title in 2018, but it’ll be more difficult if the club cannot land another high-scoring forward to take some pressure of striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is moving up in age.

Tottenham Hotspur (+900)

The Spurs challenged for an EPL crown last season but came up seven points shy in the end. When it came to straight up offense, no team was better than Tottenham Hotspur — not even defending champions Chelsea.

Harry Kane led the Premiership with 29 goals last season and the star striker has even drawn interest from Chelsea manager Antonio Conte. Bovada is pegging Kane as a +275 favorite to once again win the goal scoring title, which means Tottenham may be in store for another successful season.

Liverpool (+1100)

The Reds made a strong statement last season with an impressive fourth-place finish — a year after placing eighth overall in the EPL standings.

Liverpool returns as one of the early favorites, according to Bovada oddsmakers, who have the club at +1100. The Reds lack a star striker, but have a plethora of young forwards capable of scoring goals. Phillippe Coutino and Sadio Mane shared the lead for goals last season — each scoring 13 apiece. It was Liverpool’s stingy defense that carried them to many wins and hard-fought draws last season.

Liverpool may be a longshot to win the EPL title, but the club will certainly be in contention throughout the 2017-18 campaign.
