Netherlands the Pick in Euro 2022

The 13th Women’s European Championships kick off this week and the Netherlands are a good pick to retain their 2017 title.

Women’s Euro 2022 History and Schedule

This will be the second Women’s European Championship to feature 16 teams and is the 13th iteration of this quadrennial event, as well as the second to be held in England.

The Netherlands are the current champions after defeating Denmark 4-2 during the 2017 competition, a tournament that saw them reach the final for the first time. The competition's finest record belongs to eight-time champions Germany, while two-time champions Norway have made six final appearances, and another Scandanavian country Sweden won the Women's Euros in 1984.

Four groups of four teams make up the sixteen-team format. The winners and runners-up advance to the knockout rounds, with the final to be played on July 31 at Wembley Stadium. Following the qualifying tournament, Russian team were banned from the tournament, and Portugal have taken their place.

Can England win it in 2022?

This championship has been won by four different teams, however despite making two finals, England has not yet claimed the prize. Home field advantage will have some weight. If you exclude years where countries split hosting responsibilities and those in which the tournament was hosted by minor nations, the host nation record is four from eight, which can’t be overlooked.

The England team, which features plenty of attacking firepower, with center-forward Ellen White and emerging star Lauren Hemp both in the squad, has undergone organizational changes under head coach Sarina Weigman and is looking settled and prepared. They've also been in contention at this level fairly consistently, having reached the semifinals in three of their last four big events.

So, can England win it? It would not be a huge surprise, but that loud home support can also be a source of pressure, particularly in the latter stages. In any case, there isn’t much value in the home team at the moment and there are better wagers to be found elsewhere.

Betting on the Women’s Euro 2022 Favorites

So what about the other favorites for the Women’s Euros? Germany, France, Spain and the holders the Netherlands are all once again high in the betting markets, but there are doubts about all of them.

Spain are top of the betting at the moment, but that position is largely down to the efforts of the reigning European champions Barcelona. The Spanish national team, on the other hand, has been less effective and under Jorge Vida, have yet to win a knockout game in tournament football.

As for Germany, once the dominant force in European women’s football, they still have no shortage of talent, but their inconsistency is a problem, while the apparent disharmony in the French squad makes them a risky wagering proposition, despite the talented players in their squad.

Of the main contenders, that leaves just the Netherlands and Sweden. The reigning champions are still in transition under coach Marc Parsons, and it is fair to say that their performances so far have been unimpressive, but in Vivianne Miedema, they have one of the greats of the modern game, who can win games on her own. It could also be worth taking a chance on Sweden. They have been improving steadily in recent tournaments and have a well-balanced and consistent starting eleven.

Betting on the Outsiders for the Women’s Euro 2022

It is worthwhile considering some of the outsider teams in the tournament, given the doubts about some of those teams at the top of the market.

One team that will be top of some bettors’ lists is Denmark. In Pernille Harder they have one of the top performers in international football, and Denmark has added a number of new players since they reached the final in 2017. Unfortunately, they were placed in Group B with Spain and Germany, making it unlikely that they will advance to the knockout rounds.

Norway might consequently be a better option. The two-time champions and six-time finalists, who were drawn against England, Austria, and Wales, should have no trouble advancing to the round of eight, and their attacking tandem of Caroline Graham Hansen and Ada Hederberg, the all-time leading scorer in the Champions League, will ensure that they have the ability to trouble any team they come up against.
