Iran and the USA are set to square off on Tuesday in the final group-stage matchup for the two squads. Both the USA and Iran remain hopeful of making it out of the group stages, but both sides will need a win to advance to the knockout stages. The USMNT has just 2 points in two games, with ties vs. Wales and England. Iran has 3 points with a win vs. Wales and a loss vs. England. Heading into the matchup, Iran is a significant underdog vs. the USA. Iran (+340) is not expected to put up much of a fight against the United States (-125), but a draw isn't deemed too unlikely at (+270). Still, it's clear the books expect the Americans to deliver with a much-needed win on Tuesday. The spread is set at -0.5 in favor of the USA, while the total sits at 2.5 goals, leaning towards the over (-125).
USA Best Bets
The United States looked solid in its first World Cup game, at least for the first 60 minutes. After Timothy Weah opened the scoring against Wales, the USA looked in a prime position to pull out a win over Wales. That changed in the second half, when the energy levels were not the same as the Americans.
Against England, the USA played its best game of the tournament despite a scoreless 0-0 draw. The midfield was outstanding and there were times when the Americans looked as if they may actually pull off an upset over England. Still, after failing to record a victory, the United States will need to get all three points against Iran. The USMNT has just one goal thus far into the tournament, so they'll need to provide a better end product if they want to advance.
With the USA in desperate need to improve their goal differential and pick up a win, there are two bets I'm chasing here. The first bet is USA Total Goals OVER 1.5 at +100. Getting EVEN odds on this is quality value, with the Americans in dire need of scoring, I foresee at least two goals from them against an Iran squad that conceded six against England. In addition to the over, I'm going to back the USA to get the job done and pick up three points and a win over Iran. USA Money Line -125 is the second pick here.
Iran Best Bets
Iran put Wales in the danger zone with a stunning 2-0 victory in their group-stage matchup. Both Iran goals came after the 98th minute of play, but it was enough to give them a crucial victory which will go a long way towards keeping them afloat in the World Cup. They're up to four total goals in the tournament and would love nothing more than to advance to the knockout stages while simultaneously ending the USMNT's run.
While Iran's offense has been remarkably solid during their run at the FIFA World Cup, they're coming up against a United States team that has only conceded one goal the whole tournament. An England squad that netted six goals against Iran was held scoreless against the USA, something that doesn't bode well for Iran. Still, if the United States can't figure out its woes in front of goal, Iran could once again look to steal a late win and a spot in the next round of the tournament.
I'm anticipating the United States to maintain their strong defensive form against Iran, who, despite their four goals at the tournament, is not an exceptional offensive team. Because of that, there are a couple of bets I'm looking at for Tuesday's tilt.
The first bet is the USMNT to record a shutout win at +190 odds. I'm not sold on the Iran offense to get even a single goal against the USA, so a shutout win at plus odds feels like a solid bet. While they scored two in each of their first two games, I think the USMNT will play a strong defensive game for the full 90+ minutes.
The other bet I like is Iran Total Goals UNDER 0.5 at +138. This leaves some wiggle room in case the American offense gets stifled and fails to get on the board against Iran. They're similar bets, but both provide value in their own ways, and bettors can pick between the two if they so wish. Obviously, Iran having a disappointing game in front of goal is the key component of these bets, so the USMNT defense will be crucial.
