Sabalenka Is Defending Cincinnati Champion

The last two winners of this tournament are rated among the top three contenders to win the Cincinnati Open again this year. Top-seeded Sabalenka is the defending champion. Gauff was the Cincinnati Open champion in 2023.

Let's take a look at all of this year's top contenders.

Arnya Sabalenka (+375)

Hard courts are where it's at for Sabalenka. Last year, she won in Cincinnati and then at the US Open. She was also the 2024 Australian Open champion.

Sabalenka is 47-9 this year with three singles titles. In her past eight tournaments, she has reached five finals, two semifinals, and one quarter-final.

Iga Swiatek (+400)

The Polish player is always in the hunt at Cincinnati, but has yet to hunt down a title here. She's lost to the eventual champion two years in a row.

Last year, as the top seed, she fell to Sabalenka in the semifinals. In 2023, Gauff bounced Swiatek in the semifinals. Also the top seed in 2022, Keys beat Swiatek in the third round.

Coco Gauff (+700)

The defending champ here last year, Gauff, suffered a second-round exit as the No. 2 seed. She hasn't made it past the Round of 16 in three tournaments since beating Sabalenka in the French Open final.

Elena Rybakina (+1200)

The fourth seed in this event a year ago, Rybakina was ousted in the second round. The world No. 10 from Kazakhstan lost in the semifinals in each of her last two tournaments.

Madison Keys (+1400)

The Australian Open champion was forced to grind her way back to win 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1) over Eva Lys in her opening match of this tournament.

In 10 tournaments since that Grand Slam triumph in Melbourne, Keys hasn't won a match beyond the quarter-finals. She was a Cincinnati Open semifinalist in 2022. Keys won this tournament in 2019.

Naomi Osaka (+1400)

Osaka lost the 2020 Cincinnati Open final to Victoria Azarenka by walkover after suffering a hamstring injury. A year ago, Osaka was eliminated in Cincinnati Open qualifying.

Her final loss at the Canadian Open was Osaka's best performance in a WTA 1000 event since reaching the Madrid final in 2022.

Jessica Pegula (+1600)

Pegula is another player who enjoys her visits to the Queen City. She lost last year's final to Sabalenka, a week after Pegula won the Canadian Open. She would also fall to Sabalenka in the US Open final.

Previously, Pegula was a Cincinnati quarter-finalist in 2022. She has also been eliminated in the quarter-finals in her past two tournaments.

Clara Tauson (+1800)

Some in the sport refer to Tauson as the hardest-working woman in tennis. The Dane reached the semifinals at the Canadian Open. She raced from that heartbreaking setback to dive right into her opening match in Cincinnati.

The Montreal success saw Tauson reach the second WTA 1000 semifinal of her career. Ranked No. 15 in the world, she beat Keys and Swiatek in the Canadian Open before falling to Osaka.

WTA Cincinnati Open Longshot Bets

All eyes will be on Canada's Victoria Mboko (+2200) following her win over Osaka in last week's Canadian Open final. It was the first WTA Tour victory for the 18-year-old player, who is ranked 24th in the world, one spot ahead of former World No. 1 Osaka. Mboko jumped up from 61st overall. She was 284th in the rankings a year ago.

Another talented Canadian, Leylah Fernandez (+6600), made it to the quarter-finals of this tournament in 2024. Karolina Muchova (+3300) lost to Gauff in the 2023 Cincinnati Open final. She beat Sabalenka in the semifinals that year.

Jasmine Paolini (+4000) was a Cincinnati Open quarter-finalist in 2023. World No. 8 Amanda Anisimova (+2200) has reached the final in two of her last four tournaments. Marketa Vondrousova (+12500) was also a 2023 quarter-finalist in Cincinnati. Belinda Bencic (+4000) reached the Cincinnati quarter-finals in 2022.

And The Winner Is . . .

Sabalenka is facing a tough grind to repeat in Cincinnati. To get through the quarter-finals, she may be required to run a gauntlet of Vondrousova, Raducanu, and either Keys or Rybakina. Coming off tough Grand Slam losses to Anisimova (Wimbledon) and Gauff (Roland Garros), where is her mental state currently residing?
