EFL Cup Format

The English League Cup is a single-knockout format until the semifinals, which are two-leg home-and-home matches, with the club scoring the most total goals advancing to the next round. Chelsea squeaked past lower-division Lincoln City 2-1 in the third round of the EFL Cup. The club has a favorable fourth-round draw at home to EPL basement dwellers Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Of Chelsea's five English League Cup titles, the most recent one came in 2014-15. The club has lost its last three appearances in the final in 2018-19, 2021-22, and 2023-24. Only Liverpool has made more appearances in the final than Chelsea's 10 trips to Wembley.

Newcastle (+900)

Newcastle's win over Liverpool in last year's EFL Cup final was the club's first trophy win since the 1968-69 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the first domestic title since the 1954-55 FA Cup.

Newcastle lost the club's two previous English League Cup final appearances in 1975-76 and 2022-23.

Tottenham Hotspur (+900)

Spurs are away to Newcastle in the fourth round of the EFL Cup. Tottenham whipped Doncaster Rovers 3-0 in the third round.

The last win in the competition by Spurs was in 2007-08. Tottenham has lost three EFL Cup finals since. Those losses came in 2008-09, 2014-15, and 2020-21.

Lower Division Clubs A Bad Bet

Not since Swindon Town in 1968-69 has a club from outside England's top flight won the EFL Cup. Bradford City of League Two reached the final in 2012-13 but lost 5-0 to Swansea, then in the EPL.

This year, Swansea is among five clubs from the lower divisions in the final 16 of the competition. None are given odds shorter than +5000. In fact, two of the clubs, Wycombe Wanderers and Cardiff City, aren't even being given odds by some leading online sportsbooks.

Grimsby Town, which knocked out six-time EFL Cup winners Manchester United in the third round, is set with a betting line of +12500 to win it all.
