A return to the top of the American League East wasn’t enough to satisfy the demand for glory within the Boston Red Sox organization. After the team crashed out of the playoffs to the eventual ALCS winners the Cleveland Indians, the BoSox set out to get better and increase their chances of taking that next step back to the top, where they sat following World Series wins in 2007 and 2013. Adding ace lefty Chris Sale from the Chicago White Sox, as well as picking up first baseman Mitch Moreland and reliever Tyler Thornburg, the Red Sox not only put themselves into the argument for the title of the best team in baseball, they likely set up their offence to absorb the loss of the retiring David Ortiz.

Established in 1901, Boston is one of the oldest teams in Major League Baseball with eight World Series titles.

Boston established itself as a powerhouse team in the MLB, winning the World Series in 1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, and 1918. Between 1914 and 1918, the Red Sox were also the home of MLB legend Babe Ruth until his trade to the New York Yankees in 1919. Since Ruth’s departure from the team, Boston failed to win a single championship title for the next 86 years, a superstition that fans eventually came to know as “the curse of Bambino”. The Red Sox’s iconic rivalry with the New York Yankees also emerged during this time.

Despite Boston not winning a World Series title for 86 years, fans still got a chance to see numerous Hall of Famers in action, including Joe Cronin, Ted Williams, Jim Rice, Pedro Martinez, and Carl Yastrzemski.

Boston Red Sox Next Regular Season Game

For Boston Red Sox fans, the most exciting games are probably the ones against the New York Yankees, but in the ultra-competitive AL East, all of the teams offer up a challenge, so the team will have to make every game count.

In their bandbox of a home at Fenway Park, runs are always plentiful, so Boston is never a bad bet for the over when playing at home.

Boston Red Sox Game Schedule

With 29 other teams in the MLB and a game scheduled to take place almost every day of the week, there are more than enough chances for you to see the Red Sox in action.

The Red Sox are known for their bats and rightly so after Boston led the AL in runs (878), hits (1,598) and batting average (.282) in 2016. But don’t discount the Boston pitching. Adding Chris Sale to a rotation that already features 2016 AL Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello and David Price, the Red Sox should reduce their WHIP of 1.273, which was fourth-lowest in the AL last season.

Having placed dead last in the AL East in three of four seasons from 2012 to 2015, the Red Sox roared back with a vengeance in 2016, winning their first division crown since 2013 and they did so via some impressive consistency, enduring just one losing streak as long as four games through the entire 2016 schedule.

The Red Sox moved into first place for good on Sept. 6 and by Sept. 22, held a 5.5-game advantage atop the AL East.

The team’s all-time greats include Hall of Famers Ted Williams, Jim Rice, Pedro Martinez, and Carl Yastrzemski, among many others. When David Ortiz finished his big league career with a 38 homer, 127 RBI season, he cemented his status as a future Hall of Famer.

You’d think that filling that gap in their batting order would be daunting but Boston always seems to find quality bats. Young stars Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr. were all outstanding last season and you can add prospect Andrew Benintendi and offseason acquisition Mitch Moreland to this cast of sluggers.

The unknown quantity in all this is third baseman Pablo Sandoval. If he can rediscover the form that saw him twice hit 20-plus homers for the San Francisco Giants, it will be an unexpected bonus for the BoSox.
