Should Jon Rahm be the Favorite?

john rahm odds

Jon Rahm (+900) is getting the favorite treatment even though he has fallen off the leading spot of the FedEx Cup. Granted, he's still in the top five, but the best odds are usually reserved for the golfer who's in first or second.

This still isn't that much of a shock. Rahm continues to be one of the most consistent players on the tour. This year alone, he ranks third in average birdies per round and average score per 72 holes. Factor in his greens in regulation percentage, and he's put together a well-rounded resume that has given him the world's No. 1 ranking—again, despite only ranking fifth in the FedEx Cup standings.

If you're looking for someone to talk you out of picking him, you'll want to head elsewhere. He is a rock-solid investment. Our only concern is his driving accuracy, which is at times prone to wild swings, and he has yet to forge a meaningful sample at the Liberty National Golf Course. That could lend itself to some choppy stretches.

Better Bet: Dustin Johnson or Rory McIlroy?

Rory McIlroy (+2000) and Dustin Johnson (+2000) enter The Northern Trust with equal 20-to-1 odds. This is bound to catch some people off-guard.

McIlroy, after all, is having the better all-around season. He ranks 26th—yes, 26th—in the FedEx Cup standings and is working off a victory at the Wells Fargo Championship. We have also never seen him do such a good job optimizing both his long and short games. He currently ranks second in average driving distance off the tee and fifth in birdies buried per round.

Johnson, on the other hand, is still trying to recover from a cold start to the season. He is just 17th in the FedEx Cup standings and has just one victory to his name over the past year, at the 2020 Masters, which were delayed until November due to the coronavirus pandemic.

And yet, we can't discount how well Johnson has fared at the Liberty National Golf Course in prior years. He is not only the reigning champion at The Northern Trust, but he bagged a first-place victory in 2017 and 2010.

At the end of the day, Johnson remains one of the tour's preeminent talents. He has yet to forfeit his No. 2 world ranking even as he tumbled down the FedEx Cup ladder. If it's our money, we're taking him over McIlroy.

Is Jordan Spieth Undervalued?

Can Jordan Spieth (+1600) be undervalued when he's laying top-two outright odds? It turns out yes.

With Rahm at +900, Spieth absolutely deserves better consideration than a 16-to-1 chance. He owns the second spot in the FedEx Cup standings, picked up a victory at the Valero Open and has compiled nine total top-10 finishes on the year.

What's more, Spieth places inside the top 20 of eagles netted per round, as well as seventh in the average number of birdies. His long game still needs some work, but Liberty National is traditionally friendly to golfers with his conservative and consistent style.

2021 Northern Trust Prediction

Anyone who can tolerate the risk should take a look at Patrick Reed (+4000), who has snagged two victories at The Northern Trust since 2016, just like Dustin Johnson. Our actual pick, though? It's Johnson himself.

Rolling with a repeat bid is always iffy. The Northern Trust hasn't hosted a consecutive winner since Ernie Els in 1996 and 1997. That's a long time.

But Johnson's track record at Liberty National is too enticing to pass up. Couple that with his fast-improving scoring average per 72 holes—it's now up to No. 3 on The Tour—and we think he's uniquely positioned to grab his fourth-ever first-place finish at The Northern Trust.
