Real Madrid is aiming to win the Copa del Rey for the 20th time and it looks the best pick in a final that could have plenty of goals to entertain us.

Copa Del Rey Betting Briefing

The Copa del Rey may not have the same status as La Liga or the Champions League, but it is one of the greatest football competitions in Europe and a significant event in Spanish sports.

Given the challenges of sustaining a title challenge in La Liga, it also provides a chance for teams other than the regular Big Three of Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid to win a trophy. La Liga has been won by five different teams this century, while the Copa del Rey has been won by ten teams, including four in the last four years.

This game also frequently deviates from the pattern of significant matches being cautious and tense. Only six of the 22 Copa del Rey finals in this century required extra time, and only one required a penalty shootout. It has also produced an impressive 70 goals in 22 games this century, or roughly 3.18 per game, which is significantly higher than the average of 2.5 goals per game in La Liga.

Real Hoping to End Long Wait

Real Madrid holds the third-best record in the competition, with 19 victories out of 39 final appearances. However, the club is currently experiencing a rare Copa drought, having not reached the final since 2014, when it defeated Barcelona 2-1.

Since then, Real's Catalan rival has captured it five times and leads the Copa records with 31 victories, including seven victories since 2009.

In addition to ending a nine-year Copa wait, raising this trophy would keep the potential of a double alive, although it would not be as impressive as last year's double due to Barcelona's dominance in La Liga. Carlo Ancelotti's squad remains in the Champions League, and that will take precedence over this trophy, although with a top-four finish virtually assured, the league has little at stake.

If Real Madrid wins the Copa this year, it will have truly earned the accolade. It defeated Villarreal in the round of 16 before getting past Atletico Madrid in the quarterfinals and Barcelona in the semifinals.

Osasuna Reach Final for Second Time

Jagoba Arrasate is the second-longest-serving manager in La Liga, and he has steered the club through an extraordinary period of success. Promoted to La Liga in his first year as manager, he has led Osasuna to three successive finishes in the top 11 and the club is once again on track for a position in the middle of the standings.

Osasuna reached the lofty height of fourth in the division at one point after winning four of its first five games, though that was a short-lived excitement. However, with a 13-point cushion between the team and the threshold of relegation, another season in the topflight appears assured.

However, Arrasate's objective is significantly more historic. Osasuna's path to the final was not as challenging as Real's, but it wasn't straightforward either. The team beat Real Betis, Sevilla, and Athletic Bilbao to advance to only its second Copa del Rey final.

Copa del Rey Match Betting

Arrasate may have hoped that Real Madrid would be contending in both La Liga and the Champions League at this point, but that is not the case. As a result, Ancelotti will be able to select a stronger lineup than he would if the club were attempting to marshal its resources across three competitions.

In any case, Osasuna's game plan will be straightforward: prevent Real from scoring and hope for a little luck at the other end. In 32 La Liga league games, Arrasate's squad has scored just 29 goals but allowed only 34. This means it is extremely unlikely that Osasuna will be able to win in regulation.

Can Real break down the Osasuna defense? I think the answer to that lies in the 26 goals that Ancelotti’s team has scored over the last nine matches in all competitions. Real is hitting top goalscoring form at the right time and should be good value for the win in the match betting market.
