In-form Iga Swiatek favored for first Australian Open title

World No.1 Iga Świątek (+250) will start the 2024 Australian Open as the betting favorite to win the title for the first time in her career. The Pole will have her work cut out after being handed a brutal draw, and she will also have the defending champion, Aryna Sabalenka (+500), standing in her way. In our latest tennis betting picks, we look ahead to the tournament and tell you the best bets to place in the women’s singles competition.

  • What; 2024 Women’s Australian Open
  • When; Sunday, January 14th - Sunday, January 28th, 2024
  • Where; Melbourne Park, Victoria, Australia
  • Surface; Outdoor Hard Court
  • Defending Champion; Aryna Sabalenka

Tough start for the betting favorite

The draw was on Thursday, and World No.1 and the No.1 seed, Iga Świątek, was paired with Sofia Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion. If Świątek comes through that test, she will play the winner of the match between Danielle Collins (2022 runner-up) and Angelique Kerber (the 2016 AO Champion) in the second round.

As for the defending champion, No.2 seed Aryna Sabalenka was paired with an as-yet-unknown qualifier. Sabalenka is also on the opposite side of the draw to Świątek, meaning the pair can’t meet until the final.

Last year’s beaten finalist, the No.3 seed Elena Rybakina, was drawn to play former World No.1 Karolína Plíšková in a tough looking first round draw. Plíšková enters the tournament in good form, having knocked Naomi Osaka out of the Brisbane International tournament last week. Osaka is a two-time winner (2019 and 2021) of the Australian Open and not an opponent to take lightly.

All-in-all, it’s a pretty brutal first-round draw for some of the favorites.

Betting to win the 2024 Women’s Australian Open

So, has the first-round draw had any impact on the odds to win the women’s singles? No, has to be the answer. Despite being given a tough draw, Iga Świątek still leads the betting at +250. The Pole was the favorite at +180. But since the draw, her odds have drifted with the best tennis betting sites.

Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka is the joint-second favorite at +500, alongside the beaten finalist in 2023, Elana Rybakina, who also won the 2024 Brisbane International last week (thrashing Sabalenka 6-0, 6-3 in the final).

Rybakina is in the same half of the draw as Iga Świątek, meaning a rematch of the 2023 finals is a possibility. This could mean Rybakina has to beat Świątek along the way. But a match against the World No.1 should hold little fear for the No.3 seeded Khazakh as she defeated Świątek 6-4, 6-4, in the fourth round last year en route to her first Australian Open final.

Completing an outstanding leading four in the betting is the 2023 US Open champion Coco Gauff at +700. Fourth seed Guaff will be looking for a vast improvement at Melbourne Park, having never made it beyond the fourth round in the past.

Give Iga Świątek a miss

This is the best place to find the best bets and odds for the Australian Open 2024 and it’s also the best place for Australian Open betting picks and predictions, so here goes.

We are going to reluctantly bypass Iga Świątek. Not because we think she won’t win. But because we don’t think she is a good value pick at +250, having never even made the final here before. When you compare her odds to those of Novak Djokovic (+110) in the men’s draw, there is not much difference, and Novak has won here on ten occasions.

Instead, we are looking at the draw and also the latest form.

Our 2024 Australian Open Women’s Winner Betting Picks

Our first pick is for Aryna Sabalenka to defend her title. She is in an easier section of the draw, making her less likely to fall in the early stages.

We all know that if Iga Świątek makes it to the latter stages, she may well win. But the reason behind our pick selection is that Sabalenka is more likely to make it to the latter stages than Świątek.

We were considering going for Coco Gauff to win at +700. Guaff is in the same half of the draw as Sabalenka, with the two scheduled to meet in the semi-final if they both progress. Don’t be put off backing her. But we have instead opted to go with Elena Rybakina for our second pick.

Rybakina is in the top half of the draw. She defeated Iga Świątek here last year and also got to the final in 2023. Add to that her recent form (winning the Brisbane International), and Elena Rybakina is a good value second pick to win the 2024 Australian Open at odds of +500.
