D.C. United are one of the better-known teams competing in MLS thanks in part to their domination of the competition in the early years. They won the MLS Cup in 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2004, and the Supporters’ Shield in 1997, 1998, 2006, and 2007. The franchise also hit the headlines in 2004 when they gave a full professional debut to a 14-year old forward by the name of Freddy Adu in a fixture against the San Jose Earthquakes, making Adu the youngest professional athlete in the United States since 1887.
Those days are long gone, but D.C. United are still a force to be reckoned with, especially at RFK Stadium, where they won nine games, drew four and lost four games in 2016, results that helped push United to fourth place in the Eastern Conference and ninth overall.
DC United’s away form, however, was paradoxically poor. They mustered only two victories on their travels. United came home from their travels empty-handed on six occasions and drew nine of their games on the road.
