The San Jose Earthquakes, more fondly known as ‘The Quakes’, have competed in the MLS from the beginning. They played in the first ever MLS game against DC United in 1996, winning 1-0. The Quakes roots go back to 1974 in the North American Soccer League. The Quakes currently play their home games at the Avaya Stadium after a long stint at Buck Shaw stadium on the Santa Clara University campus in California. The Quakes have a rich history in the MLS, having won two MLS titles in the 2001 and 2003 seasons. In 2022, however, they finished last in the Western Conference.
They followed this up with two Supporters’ Shields in 2005 and 2012.
After their first Supporters Shield in 2005, the Quakes took a hiatus from the MLS. After failed attempts to secure a soccer-specific stadium, the owner planned to move to Houston. The MLS had other ideas and the Quakes were informed that their name, colors, logo and competitive history would not be transferred with them. Head coach Dominic Kinnear, a number of senior players and coaching staff moved to Houston, where they become Houston 1836, and later the Houston Dynamo.
After a two-year break, the Earthquakes made a comeback in 2008 and resumed their play. From 2015 onwards, they have been hosting their home games at PayPal Park, which was formerly known as Avaya Stadium between 2015 and 2019, and later renamed Earthquakes Stadium in 2020.
