It is hard to imagine that the Premier League’s Manchester City were in the third tier of English soccer in 1998. They’ve now assembled a squad capable of challenging for major honors in both domestic and European competitions. A large portion of Manchester City’s success is down to the huge financial investment by the Abu Dhabi United Group which took over the club in 2008. After massive investment, Manchester City won the Premier League in 2012 and again in 2014, the latter being their fourth top-flight league title. [+]

Prior to the epic transformation of the club, Manchester City’s best years came in the 1960s, a decade where they won the old second division title, the FA Cup, the League Cup, and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.

These days, Manchester City supporters turn up to the City of Manchester Stadium in droves to watch some of the best soccer players in the world take to the pitch.

Man City were pegged as +250 favorites going into the 2016-17 season. Pep Guardiola wasn’t able to come up with the winning formula, though.

Scoring goals was not a problem for City during the 2015-16 campaign, as they topped the charts with 71 goals. They didn’t have any difficulty scoring goals during the 2016-17 season either. They did, however, struggle defensively compared to the other top teams. City had their fair share of injuries, particularly to club captain Vincent Kompany. He’s a crucial part of City’s defense. If he can stay healthy, look for City to once again be challenging for the title.

Guardiola also has to solve his issue in goal. Claudio Bravo and Willy Caballero have both struggled mightily. Neither are cut out for the rough and tumble Premier League. Surely the manager will use City’s big pockets to find a competent replacement, though Guardiola is particularly stubborn so we’ll see what happens.

Until City sort out their defensive frailties, bet the over in most games, especially at home. They score at will but also concede far too many to be considered title contenders. They should shop accordingly in the off season, making the 2017-18 campaign particularly interesting for this juggernaut.

Guardiola will be expected to win at least one trophy and the Premier League will be his main priority. A top-four finish is necessary for a team who spends the astronomical amount City does. Anything else would be a disaster.

City will once again be good futures bets but not as good as Tottenham and Chelsea. They have a better chance of winning than Liverpool and Arsenal, so keep that in mind when placing your futures bets for the 2016-17 season.

They’re always great bets to win the FA Cup so put your money down on them as early as possible in that competition. Back Gabriel Jesus for the Golden Boot. He is incredibly talented, knows where the goal is, isn’t afraid to battle it out in the trenches and is gifted with breakneck pace. Also, Guardiola’s offense-first system is conducive to goals galore.
