Originally founded in 1996 as the New York Metro Stars, the Red Bulls are one of the 10 charter teams of Major League Soccer. In its twenty-year franchise history, the Red Bulls have featured high-profile players such as French superstar Thierry Henry, and currently, English striker Bradley Wright-Phillips. During their initial years in the MLS as the Metro Stars, New York have had many notable players on their roster, including Peter Vermes, Giovanni Savarese, Lothar Matthaus, and Tim Howard.
In 2001, the Metro Stars’ Clint Mathis set an MLS record with five goals in a single game against the Dallas Burn (now FC Dallas). After Red Bull’s takeover of the team in 2006, New York saw the arrival of even more notable players, including Juan Pablo Angel in 2007, Thierry Henry in 2010, and Bradley Wright-Phillips in 2013.
Today, the Red Bulls are still seeking for their first MLS Cup. The team made a finals appearance in 2008, where they dropped a 3-1 decision to the Columbus Crew. New York have also captured two Supporters’ Shields, in 2013 and 2015.
One of the Red Bulls’ major rivals is D.C. United. Since 1996, these two teams have faced off annually in a match called the Atlantic Cup. A huge fixture and one we’ll be keeping an eye on in 2023. But who will win it?

Without a doubt, the team’s rivalry with D.C. United is definitely worth paying attention to, but it is only a small part of all the team’s MLS action in a season.
