The Portland Timbers have a long history in soccer, dating back to 1975 when they joined the North American Soccer League (NASL). In 2009 Portland were announced as the 18th team in the MLS. The Timbers got their first taste of success in the 2013 season under the then-new head coach and manager Caleb Porter. They finished first in the Western Conference and third place overall that season. The Timbers followed that up with a disappointing 2014 season and had to start the 2015 campaign without star players Diego Valeri and Will Johnson.
Despite their injury problems Portland managed to achieve great success, placing first in the Western Conference again and making their first appearance in the MLS cup.
Portland made it all the way to the finals where Columbus Crew SC there waiting for them. Star player Diego Valeri scored 27 seconds into the final, the fastest goal in MLS cup history. It was followed up by another in the first half from Rodney Wallace. The Timbers managed to hold off Columbus Crew SC and win the MLS cup on their first attempt. They became the first team in the Cascadia rivalry to do so, giving them some major bragging rights.
The Timbers failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2016, missing out by two points and finishing seventh in the West. Their poor showing was mostly down to the fact they didn't win a single regular season away game and only picked up six points on their travels.
The Timbers have a huge fan base, well known for selling out every home game and having the most season ticket holders in the MLS.

At Providence Park, the Timbers went 12-3-2, scoring 35 goals and conceding 21 from 17 games. Away from home, however, Timbers posted a 0-11-6 record, found the back of the net only 13 times and let the opposition score 32 goals.
If 2017 follows the same path, expect the Timbers to miss out on the playoffs again, but if the head coach can work out what is wrong when his side travels -- and manages to fix it -- we could see Portland not only return to the playoff places but also challenge for the conference title.
