The Whitecaps, sometimes referred to as the 'Caps', were the 17th addition to the MLS. Based out of Vancouver, they compete in the Western Conference. In 2012, the Whitecaps became the first Canadian team to participate in the MLS. The Caps managed just a single victory in their first 12 matches and elected to fire their head coach. The Director of Operations took over on a temporary basis. The transfer of power went well initially, as they began the next season with a new coach and a win over Canadian rivals Toronto in the opening game.
But they couldn't muster a conistent winning formula and failed to win in their next 11 matches. Vancouver decided they still weren't happy with their coach so Tom Soehn took over on a temporary basis for the second time in as many seasons.
Martin Rennie was named head coach for team's third season, which is when they started tofind the winning formula. The Caps ended the campaign with 11 wins, 3 losses and 10 ties and went on to participate in the playoff for the first time.
Rennie's contract was not extended and once again the hunt was on for a new head coach to try and deliver the success that everyone at the club was craving for. The qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League in 2014 by the way of being the highest ranking Canadian team. They went on to qualify for the playoffs for a second time, something that no other Canadian side has managed.
