Europe to win the Ryder Cup on American soil for first time since 2012

Europe has claimed 10 of the past 14 Ryder Cups following its victory in Rome in 2023. But this year's event will be held at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York and Team USA has captured back-to-back wins as hosts.

Team USA favored

Team USA is a -150 favorite to win their third-consecutive Ryder Cup on home soil. The last away victory for either side came way back in 2012 when Europe (+140) orchestrated the 'Miracle at Medinah' comeback on the final day. "I think one of the biggest accomplishments in golf right now is winning an away Ryder Cup," said Rory McIlroy recently. "And that's what we're going to do at Bethpage."

The U.S. has an all-time record of 27-15-2, however, the Europeans have won 10 of the past 14 editions.

Bettors can wager on a tie (+1200) but there have only been two ties in 44 events dating back to 1927. In fact. the last five Ryder Cups have seen a winning margin of five points or more.

Team captains

Both the United States and Europe are using a system that will allow six players to qualify on points. The 12-man rosters will then be filled out by six captain's picks.

Former world no 1 Luke Donald returns as captain after leading the Europeans to a 16.5 to 11.5 triumph in Rome in 2023. Meanwhile, US team captain Keegan Bradley sits ninth in points and has a shot at becoming the first playing captain at the Ryder Cup since Arnold Palmer in 1963.

Which players have qualified?

Heading into The Open Championship, the top six in the U.S. Team standings are Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, J.J. Spaun, Russell Henley, Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas. From LIV Golf, Patrick Reed and five-time major champion Brooks Koepka should get the call.

In the European standings, McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Robert MacIntyre, Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka lead the way. As for captain picks, Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm are obvious LIV picks after enjoying unbeaten weeks in 2023.

Only Scheffler and McIlroy have mathematically clinched spots on their team, so a lot could still change before September.

Can Scottie bounce back?

Scottie Scheffler is the best golfer in the world, but he was left in tears after he and Brooks Koepka were demolished (9&7) by Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg in 2023. It stands as the largest margin of victory for an 18-hole match, foursomes or otherwise, in the 44-edition history of the tournament.
