2024 Players Championship Picks: Scottie Scheffler a Clear Favorite
  • What: 2024 Players Championship
  • When: March 14th-17th
  • Where: TPC Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL

One of the most prestigious tournaments on the PGA Tour takes place this weekend in the 2024 Players Championship. This event is at the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, a par-72 located in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, just southeast of Jacksonville. Reigning champion Scottie Scheffler is a massive +600 favorite to repeat as he's also coming off a victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week. But, there's a plethora of other talented golfers who will definitely be in the mix. Rory McIlroy (+1600), Xander Schauffele (+2200), Justin Thomas (+2500), Viktor Hovland (+2800), and Max Homa (+2800) are some of them. A lot of big names are playing here, which should make it very competitive. Continue reading for the Players Championship picks.

The Players Championship isn't actually a major, but it's seen by many as the "fifth major" because of its popularity and importance. This event has a whopping $25 million purse. The winner will get $4.5 million. As mentioned, Scheffler took home that money last year while Tyrell Hatton finished as runner-up.

Scottie Scheffler (+600)

It's hard to ignore Scheffler's impressive play this season. The world no. 1 has played in six tournaments thus far in 24' and finished in the top-10 in all but one. He was sixth at Pebble Beach, third at the Phoenix Open, fifth at The Sentry, and of course, first at Arnold Palmer. The 27-year-old finished 15 below par in that event, finishing five strokes ahead of the next player in second place. Scheffler is ranked 1st in the FedEx PGA standings as well. He was -17 at the Players Championship a year ago en route to the title. Stellar.

Rory McIlroy (+1600)

McIlroy might be 34, but he's still one of the best around. He's ranked second in the world and finished -16 at the 2019 Players Championship, which he won. The Northern Ireland native just bested Jim Furyk by one stroke that year. As for current form, McIlroy is actually off to a disappointing start to begin the season. In four tournaments, he's failed to finish better than 21st. That was where he ended up at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. But, TPC Sawgrass is a place where he's enjoyed success before, so why not again?

Xander Schauffele (+2200)

Schauffele is playing solid golf to begin the year. In six events, he's been in the top-10 on four occasions. His best finish was at the Genesis Invitational last month, finishing in fourth. He's sixth in the world rankings and ninth in the FedEx standings. The 2023 Players Championship resulted in a 19th-place finish for the California native.

Max Homa (+2800)

Homa has finished 16th and eighth in his last two PGA Tour events, the Genesis Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. That was after he shockingly missed the cut at the Phoenix Open. Homa is top-10 in the world rankings but has yet to really find his best on the Tour. The Players' Championship has been a success for him at times, finishing in sixth last season and 13th the year before. While it's unlikely Homa will win, a more specific bet could be worth it here for the 33-year-old in the Players Championship picks.

Viktor Hovland (+2800)

There will be a mixed opinion on Hovland this weekend. When it comes to the Players' Championship he's been a beast here in the last two years with a ninth place and third place finish. But, if you look at the Norwegian's play overall in 24', it's dismal. In four events, 19th at the Genesis Invitational was his best. That being said, Hovland is still the fourth-best golfer in the world according to the rankings so he could turn up in Florida and produce the goods. We'll see.

Will Zalatoris (+3000)

I see Will Zalatoris as one to watch this weekend. He is firing on all cylinders right now, finishing tied for second at Genesis and tied for fourth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He was also 13th at the Farmers Insurance Open. Just 29th in the world rankings, Zalatoris owns a pair of finishes of 26th or better at the Players Championship. He does appear to be trending in the right direction.

Players Championship Picks

I think it's impossible to not at least throw a little bit of money down on Scheffler because the man is just on fire. McIlroy and Zalatoris are worth it, too. I expect all of these guys to be in the mix when Sunday rolls around.
