The Miami Dolphins Super Bowl Stock is Rising Entering Week 9

The Miami Dolphins Super Bowl Stock is Rising Entering Week 9

Now that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is back in the fold, should we take the Miami Dolphins as serious Super Bowl threats entering their Week 9 matchup vs. the Chicago Bears, on Sunday, November 6, at 1 p.m. EST?

This is not an easy question to answer. And the best online NFL betting sites seem split on the answer when looking at their odds to win the Super Bowl. Sure, the Dolphins are undefeated when Tua is actually under center. But do they have the chops to hang in an AFC conference that also includes the Kansas City Chiefs and division rival Buffalo Bills? What's more, at 5-3, the Dolphins aren't exactly sitting pretty. They are in the playoff hunt, but they're not guaranteed a spot. The few weeks Tua missed while recovering from a concussion hurt them. So, are they locks to beat Chicago?

We'll get to the answers in a second. First, let's have a gander at the latest NFL online betting odds for Dolphins vs. Bears, courtesy of BetUS:

That gives the Dolphins vs. Bears betting odds plenty of time to move prior to this week's kickoff. And given how many changes Chicago underwent at the trade deadline, it's reasonable to assume more than a few tweaks will be made. Ipso facto: Stay vigilant.

And with all that said, it's time to deliver our Dolphins vs. Bears predictions!

The Miami Dolphins Are Set to Dominate the Chicago Bears in Week 9

Looking at the Miami Dolphins' season-long stats ultimately doesn't do them justice. The numbers say they have a mediocre offense, but they didn't have Tua at full strength for roughly half the season. When he's been entirely healthy and under center, they've gone to work. They've yet to lose a game with him at quarterback this year.

What's more, almost no other team rivals their big-play potential. The Dolphins are second in net yards per passing attempt—and that's with their backups taking plenty of snaps in Tua's absence.

To that end, Miami is uniquely built to carve up Chicago's defense. The Bears are structured to stop the run, and they do a damn good job. They are first in net yards allowed per rushing attempt. But they are incredibly vulnerable in the secondary, where they rank 29th in net yards allowed per pass thrown by the opposition.

It would be an honest to god shock if the trio of Tua, Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill don't have a gargantuan showing versus Chicago. Miami is averaging nearly 30 points per game with its QB1 in the fold and coming off a 31-point detonation against the Detroit Lions in Week 8. They shouldn't just win. They should demolish the Bears.

OSB Prediction: Miami Dolphins (-215)

Have Faith in the Dolphins Covering Their Week 9 Spread

Below you can see the latest NFL point spread betting odds for Dolphins vs. Bears:

  • Miami Dolphins, -5 (-110)
  • Chicago Bears, +5 (-110)

Miami and Chicago have both been relative coin tosses against the spread this year. They're a combined 7-8-1 between them. That doesn't provide us with much insight for this matchup. But it doesn't need to.

The Bears became full-on sellers at the trade deadline this past week and are a noticeably less talented team than they were entering Week 8. They were never built to win, and now, they're hardly built to even lose respectably.

We don't mean to be dismissive, mind you. Quarterback Justin Fields has shown considerable development over the past couple of games, and Miami's secondary has at times been forgiving. Still, the talent disparity between these two teams on the offensive side of the ball is stark. Even if this turns into a shootout, we'd be on the Dolphins winning by a touchdown or more—even if the weather in Chicago is unseasonably cold.

OSB Prediction: Miami Dolphins, -5 (-110)

The Dolphins-Bears Over is a Little Too High for Our Tastes, and Here's Why

Check out the latest NFL over/under betting odds for Bears vs. Dolphins below:

  • Over 45.5 (-110)
  • Under 45.5 (-110)

Miami has ranked among the most popular "over" bets in the league this year. And they're not paying out. The Dolphins have hit the over only three times in eight games. Tua's absence has a lot to do with that, but they've also played against some pretty challenged offenses.

That's what we're seeing in their matchup with Chicago. Justin Fields is flashing better decision-making in the pocket, but the Bears still haven't put much talent around him. We are hard-pressed to believe that he'll match the career-high 120.0 QB rating he posted against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8.

If you think the Bears will clear three touchdowns in this one, by all means, invest in the over. But it will be cold in Chicago, which lends itself to shorter-yardage plays and lower-scoring games. We're taking the under, even if we're only half-confident in the decision.

OSB Prediction: Under 45.5 (-110)

Dolphins and Bears To score under 45.5 points combined
