The good news: sports betting is now legal in the state of Ohio and its population of 12 million.

The bad news: there's still no official set-up to actually betting on sports. That won't last long, however.

At the tail end of 2021, the Ohio Legislature passed HB 29 to legalize and regulate the practice. HB 29 covers gambling anywhere and everywhere inside the state — brick-and-mortar facilities, terminals in bars and restaurants, and most of all, on the Internet. With Ohio's inclusion, more than one-half of the USA now has legal sports betting in some capacity. Here's what you need to know about what happens next for would-be bettors in the Buckeye State:

Sports fans in Texas have been waiting on pins and needles for years to see if the state will ever legalize sports betting. That wait lives on, and it will continue until at least November 2022, when the next major elections are held and the matter is expected to be voted on. Alabama has long been notorious for its opposition to any form of gambling and is the only state east of the Mississippi River to now offer any sort of lottery. That commitment to puritanism remained intact earlier this spring as the 2022 Alabama state legislative session drew to a close without a vote on two proposed bills that would clear the way for an increase in legal gambling.

A renewed effort to legalize sports betting is underway in South Carolina. A bipartisan bill sponsored by Rep. William Herbkersman (R) and Rep. Todd Rutherford (D) was introduced in South Carolina in late April, reviving efforts to add the Palmetto State to the growing list of states embracing online legal sports betting in the USA.

The trend toward legalized sports betting was sparked in 2018 when the United States Supreme Court struck down a federal law banning sports betting in most jurisdictions across the country. In the wake of that groundbreaking decision, over 30 states have taken steps to open their doors to both retail and online sports betting, including South Carolina’s two neighbors, North Carolina and Georgia.

As legal online sports betting has become more common in the United States, the overarching discussion around gambling has expanded to include how this shift impacts collegiate sports. Many regions with legal sports betting preclude residents from wagering on college teams within their state or collegiate sports in general. The state of Michigan, however, appears to be going in the complete opposite direction—a decision that will no doubt have a trickle-down effect on the rest of the country.
