Stick with the Cavaliers for NCAA Lacrosse Championship success

We’re down to the final eight teams in the men’s 2023 NCAA Lacrosse Championship. The defending champions are gone, but three of the top ranked sides still remain in contention. Who will win? Here we take a closer look with the latest futures betting, and while we’re at it, we’ll name our betting pick to win the NCAA Lacrosse Championship.

  • The men’s 2023 Lacrosse Championship final will be played at the Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Eight teams remain, Duke, Virginia, Notre Dame, Penn State, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Michigan, and Army West Point
  • The quarter-finals are on May 20th and 21st, the semi-finals are on May 27th, with the final taking place on Monday, May 29, 2023

The Maryland Terrapins are the reigning champions, but they were knocked out by the Army Black Knights in a shock result in last weekend’s first round.

Even though they were the defending champions, the Terrapins weren’t the favorites with best online betting sites. That was Virginia. But with Virginia set to face Notre Dame in the next round (assuming they both win), Duke have become joint-favorites with the Cavaliers. Let’s take a closer look with the latest betting odds to win the 2023 Lacrosse Championship.

Betting to win the 2023 Lacrosse Championship

As we’ve just alluded to, the Duke Blue Devils and Virginia Cavaliers are the joint-betting favorites at +250. Following behind the No.1 and No.2 seeds are the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at +280.

After the three market leaders comes Penn State at +700. The Nittany Lions have a real chance to go deep in the competition after the Black Knights knocked the Terrapins out in the last round. The Terrapins would have been Penn State’s quarter-final opponents had they not suffered a shock exit.

The rest of the betting is made up of Johns Hopkins at +1200, with Georgetown and Michigan both at +1400. And as reward for knocking out the defending champions, the Black Knights are last in the betting at +2500.

Quarter-finals betting

In the quarter-finals this weekend, Duke (1) faces Michigan, Penn State (5) takes on the Black Knights, Notre Dame (3) faces Johns Hopkins (6), and Virginia (2) will line up against Georgetown (7).

In the betting, Duke is -350 to beat Michigan who are +265. Penn State are only -210 to defeat the Black Knights, who themselves are +170 to take out another seed. In the other half of the draw, the Fighting Irish are -500 to beat Johns Hopkins who are +360, and Virginia are -400 to beat Georgetown, who are +310.

There’s little value on the moneyline for any of those matches. Duke, Notre Dame, and Virginia are all too short to back. And there is no certainty that Penn State will finally eliminate the Black Knights from the competition.

What we do like the look of though is Virginia on the handicap spread. In their last round matches, Georgetown struggled to see off Yale, only defeating them by two points (19-17). But Virginia had no such problems against Richmond, as we would expect, beating them convincingly by 17 points to eight.

In this quarter-final match up, Virginia are giving the Hoyas a start of 3.5 points. The Cavaliers are -120 to cover the 3.5 points, and we think that looks like a good bet this weekend.

Our Pick to win the 2023 Lacrosse Competition

Sticking with the Cavaliers, and they’ve been one of the favorites to win this competition all year for good reasons. Under the leadership of Lars Tiffany, the Virginia Cavaliers won this competition in both 2019 and 2021. They probably would have gotten the hat-trick of wins had it not been for the global pandemic leading to the cancelation of the 2020 season.

In 2022, the Cavaliers would have been shocked to go down 18-9 to the Terrapins at the quarter-finals stage. The possibility of gaining revenge on Maryland has gone now that they’ve exited the competition. But the desire to add another championship title to the two they’ve won recently hasn’t.

The big challenge will be the Fighting Irish in the semi-finals, and boy what a clash that promises to be. But if the Cavaliers can come through that, we think they will win the title. So therefore we are making the Virginia Cavaliers our futures betting pick to win the 2023 Lacrosse Championship.
