Curling Picks; Team Fujisawa the new favorites to win Canadian Open

The 2023 Co-op Canadian Open is well underway now, and in the women’s draw, there have already been a couple of shocks that have led to a shake-up in the latest Curling betting.

  • What; 2023 Canadian Co-op Open
  • Where; Encana Arena, Camrose, Alberta, Canada
  • When; Tuesday, January 10th - Sunday, January 15th, 2023

New Betting Favorites

After securing qualification to the playoffs with three wins three, the new favorites to win the Canadian Open is Team Fujisawa. The Japanese team led by double Olympic medalist Satsuki Fujisawa has beaten Team Keiser 8-6, and Team Tirinzoni 8-6, and on Thursday, they defeated the pre-competition betting favorites, Team Einarson, 5-4.

This win has turned the betting odds upside down, with Fujisawa now the new favorites at +230. For the record, Kerri Einarson’s team is now out to +340.

Women’s Betting to win 2023 Canadian Open

With such quality on show in the women’s section, it’s hardly surprising to see movement in the betting. Around half of the teams have beaten each other on a given day, which is why it should be no shock to see the favorites tag switching hands in the opening few days.

In the latest betting to win the Canadian Open, Satsuki Fujisawa’s team is now the favorites at +230. They started the competition at +1200, so this is a major move in the betting. The second favorites are now Team Einarson, who are now +340. Just a couple of days ago, Kerri Einarson’s team was into +140, and this after starting the tournament at +200.

As for Team Homan, they started the competition as second favorites at +325. They are now out to +410. Making them third favorites. You can find full betting from the best online sports betting sites in our odds table below.

Another chance for Team Hasselborg

Former Olympic gold medalist Anna Hasselborg started the competition sensationally. On Tuesday, her team defeated the number 8 seeded side, Team Scheidegger, 9-6. They then followed that up with an 8-0 win over Team Peterson on Wednesday.

All this has seen them make a big move in the betting to win the competition. After starting at +900, they were cut into +390 on the back of the two wins.

Team Hasselborg couldn’t complete the qualification the first time asked, though. On Thursday, they lost 4-2 to Sweden’s Team Wrana. The team led by Isabella Wrana is now through. At the same time, Anna Hasselborg’s team is now playing Team Ackland for a place in the latter stages.

The defeat to Wrana saw Hasselborg’s odds drift from back out to +800, roughly where she started the competition,

A competition full of shocks

The competition started spectacularly when Team Peterson came from nowhere and completely wiped the floor with Team Homan, beating the then-second favorites 9-1 in their opening match. Normal service was then - briefly - resumed when Petersen’s team lost 8-0 to Anna Hasselborg in their second match.

As a result of that loss, and then a 10-8 loss to Team Gim, Petersen’s team is now back out to +7000 to win the competition. And this after starting it so well.

The shocks don’t end there, either. The original favorites, Team Einarson and Team Homan are both playing off tonight for a place in the playoffs. The losers will get one more chance to qualify, but it wasn’t a place that either team expected to find themselves in at this stage of proceedings.

Team Einarson vs Team Homan Betting

Moving onto that matchup, and on the moneyline, Team Einarson is just the favorites at -125. Team Homan is +105. This reflects the original competition's outright winner odds, where Einarson was just ahead of Homan in the betting.

The handicap line is interesting, though. Team Homan is getting a +1.5 start; with that advantage, they are -187. Starting at -1.5, Team Einarson is +140. On the over/under-betting line, the total is set at 10.5. Both over and under are -110.

Kerri Einarson’s team has beaten Team Acland 8-2, Team Lawes 7-1, and lost to Team Fujisawa 5-4. As for Rachel Homan, her team started with that awful 9-1 loss to Team Petersen. They then recorded an 8-2 win over Team Scheidegger and a 6-3 win over Team Jones.

Even though Team Homan was my pick to win the competition, I think a bet on Team Einarson to win this match on the handicap could be good value.

Keep the faith

Moving on, I’m sticking with Team Homan to win the competition. Even if they lose to Einarson in this crucial match, they will have another chance to qualify for the playoffs.

Once we get to that competition stage, it’s a different game altogether. Knockout Curling brings a different mindset, and this is where I think Rachel Homan and her team can excel.
